What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) technique used to restore function and promote the body’s healing response.

This ancient Chinese discipline involves the precise insertion of ultra-fine, sterile needles into specific points across the body.

The needles then stimulate the flow of vital energy and blood within the body, thereby restoring balance to the organs and systems.

Benefits of Acupuncture

Drug-free pain relief

Acupuncture is a natural therapy that can stimulate the body's natural painkillers which act in the nervous system to reduce pain. Acupuncture shows effectiveness in treating both acute types of pain and chronic pain conditions.

Improved wellbeing

Acupuncture is a safe form of treatment with very few side effects. It is a standout alternative for those wanting to avoid medication, and can be undertaken at the same time as Western medicine treatments.

Reduced inflammation

By influencing the immune system, circulatory system and stress response, acupuncture can promote a reduction in inflammation. Chronic inflammation is a factor in a myriad of conditions including autoimmune diseases, osteoarthritis and endometriosis.

Personal treatment

Acupuncture treatment plans are tailored specifically to the needs of each person. A combination of clinical history taking, Chinese medicine diagnosis, and assessment of pathology results are considered in each plan.

Stress relief

By activating the parasympathetic - or - “rest and digest” arm of the autonomic nervous system, acupuncture can restore a sense of calm and relaxation to the body.

Preventative care

Acupuncture can be used preventatively as a way to maintain balance and ward off issues before they start. By optimising physical and mental health using acupuncture, the body can remain strong and responsive in day-to-day life.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

In Chinese medicine, the body has pathways called ‘meridians’, which are like energy highways. Great health depends on the smooth and even flow of vital energy, called Qi (ch-ee), along these pathways. Acupuncturists insert needles at specific points on the meridians to help regulate Qi flow, enhance blood circulation, and encourage healing within the body.

Acupuncture can influence the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin which can improve mood; and natural opioid-like neuropeptides such as endorphins which act to reduce pain within the body.

Acupuncture is also known for having a direct effect on the nervous system which helps to regulate hormones and the stress response, as well as promoting parasympathetic nervous system activities such as relaxation, healing and healthy digestion.

Does acupuncture work?

Yes. Acupuncture has been found to have positive effects for many areas of clinical concern including in gynaecological, reproductive, musculoskeletal, mental health and stress conditions.

Can I receive acupuncture while pregnant?

Yes. Acupuncture can be safely performed during pregnancy. Jess has completed additional training in fertility and pregnancy acupuncture. She uses acupuncture to support her patients in becoming pregnant, early pregnancy, threatened miscarriage, pregnancy nausea, pregnancy fatigue and preparing for labour.

Is acupuncture the same as dry needling?

No. Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that is a part of a broader system of medicine. Dry needling is a modern musculoskeletal practice.

Acupuncturists not only make use of the local muscle trigger points used in dry needling (traditionally called Ah-shi points), but they are also able to use the meridian system to treat affected areas of the body by needling a different body area.

For example, to treat shoulder pain an acupuncturist may needle acupuncture points over the affected shoulder region and structures. Additionally, they can utilise acupuncture points elsewhere on the body that connect to meridians that run through the shoulder. Oftentimes, they’ll do both.

This is of particular advantage when patients have musculoskeletal conditions that are intensely painful and prohibit direct needling over the affected area.

Fun fact: One of the most famous and effective acupuncture points for treating shoulder pain (ST38 Tiaokou) is located on the lower leg!
